Consulting has initiated, enforced and guided the digitization of other branches for years. But for now, they almost did not adopt digitization to their own industry, their own level of digitization is still low.
Still today, consulting is (almost) not digitized or automatized, but depends on the consultants, their knowledge, abilities and network. Of course, consultants are using digital devices like smartphones and tablets, relying on digital services like presentation software, but these technologies do not directly affect the service itself, namely the way a consult is processed. As a consequence, one might ask if information and communication technology (ICT) may help to transform and develop the consulting service itself as well.
The way to digital consulting: AWSi concepts and prototypes
Often, the already adopted approach of remote consulting is understood as the digitization of consulting exclusively. If a consultant is using internet-based communication rather than being present at client site, you speak of remote consulting. This offers availability independent of space and time. A typic example is video-conferencing. In particular, remote-consulting allows to reduce travel costs and time. Additionally, it is possible to offer consulting on a smaller scale, especially for those situations where services were originally uneconomical due to travel expenses.
The digitization of consulting isn’t done alone with remote consutling, though. Remote consulting is just a step into the right direction. The AWS-Institute for digitized products and processes takes a pioneering role in the digitization of consulting and develops concepts and software based on newest information technologies whose market relevance is already recognizable today. The Institute focuses on designing quickly applicable solutions providing an entry point to digital consulting.

As a result, digital services pose special prerequisites to the conventional service. Consequently, we define a digital service as an immaterial service, that emerges from the transformation of potentially marketable production process via ICT to a more efficient or effective process.
Conditions for digitization
The question arises which characteristics consulting services need to have so that they can benefit from advanced system classes and hance are digitizable. So a consulting service has to fulfill a number of requirements which are necessary conditions for digitization.
A digitizable consulting service is:
