Idea: In the course of this thesis, it will be examined which AI methods are suitable for anomaly detection on energy data. Different use cases and anomalies should be considered. Data science on energy data is a rapidly growing research area, which is why various data science methods should be used in this thesis. The goal is to investigate novel use cases based on real energy data using data science methods.

Prerequisites: Practical programming skills ideally in Python or C#, knowledge of classic machine learning and deep learning frameworks such as Pytorch, Keras, Tensorflow, ideally basic knowledge of energy data and anomaly detection

courses: Data Science, (energy) informatics, business informatics, industrial engineering, business administration, (energy) informatics

Thesis: Master thesis

Idea: The aim of this thesis is to design new business models through the use of the digital product passport in the circular economy. The main question is how producers and manufacturers can earn money if they produce their products sustainably and reusably. The Digital Product Passport is a digital tool that contains product information and enables the traceability of products along the value chain, so that a recycling company, for example, still has access to the data at the end of the product's life.

Prerequisites: Basics of the circular economy and its current business models

courses: business administration, business informatics, industrial engineering, environmental sciences or similar

Thesis: bachelor thesis

Idea: In the course of this thesis, the current status of the use of energy data in companies is to be examined in the context of the increasing importance of energy (keywords: energy transition, circular economy). Questions such as the basic existence of data on energy production and consumption, as well as the scope and type of use of this data should be determined. In addition to a theoretical consideration of the issue, the findings should be determined through qualitative and/or quantitative surveys with companies in a sector. The aim of the thesis is to determine use cases and advantages of using their energy data for companies both today and with a view to the future (see keywords).

Prerequisites: Good knowledge of the generation and use of energy in companies and the possibilities of collecting and using energy data, basic understanding of the consequences of the energy transition for companies and ideally basic empirical knowledge

courses: Renewable energies, business administration, industrial engineering, or similar.

Thesis: Master thesis

Project: ProDiNA

Idea: The aim of this thesis is to a) design and b) develop a material evaluation system in terms of recyclability. Thematically, this thesis is in the area of the digital product passport, which will be mandatory for all products across the EU in the future and is considered a core element of the circular economy. As part of a research project, we analyze and optimize the material composition of a product with regard to its recyclability and, on this basis, create a digital sustainability passport as transparent proof of the product's recyclability. Against this background, this thesis first identifies the parameters relevant to the recyclability of a material (e.g. theoretical chemical suitability for recycling, contaminating additives, sortability, reusability, etc.) and then develops an evaluation scheme (quantitative key figure system). For this purpose, the scientific state of the art in the area of material recycling must be viewed and taken into account. Building on this, the relevant parameters must finally be developed for the materials used in the product (research & interviews with recycling companies) in order to validate and fill the evaluation system developed.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of materials science, basics of circular economy and recycling

courses: Materials science, environmental science, circular economy, sustainability management or similar

Thesis: Bachelor's or master's thesis (depending on the scope)

Idea: As part of your master's thesis, you will develop a platform for our specialist magazine IM+io and at the same time actively design the technical introduction of a credit model for digital subscription and distribution of the articles.

Prerequisites: Very good knowledge of web and, if necessary, app development as well as programming (Java Script, HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL)

Courses: (Business, media) computer science, computer science, data science or comparable courses

Thesis: Master thesis

Idea: As part of two BMBF research projects, we are researching the use of HITL systems to verify proposed measures in inpatient long-term care (ViKI pro) and for verifying clustering results of OCT scans in ophthalmology (FläKI). As part of the thesis, the requirements must first be collected together with the practice partners (e.g. in the form of interviews, workshops, questionnaires). To do this, the scientific state-of-the-art must be viewed and taken into account. Based on this, the entire system must be designed and implemented as a prototype. Finally, the resulting demonstrator can be evaluated together with the practical partners.

Prerequisites: Programming knowledge (e.g. Python, Typescript)

Courses: (Media) Informatics, Computer Science, Data Science or comparable courses

Thesis: Bachelor's or Master's thesis

Idea: The aim of the ViKI pro research project, funded by the BMBF, is to develop and test an evidence- and expert-based, self-learning system for decision support in planning measures as part of the professional nursing process in the application fields of “mobility” and “pain”. As part of the thesis, an entity relation corpus will be built on the basis of a data model, with the help of which attributes relevant to nursing planning can be extracted for the decision support system. To this end, the scientific state of the art of entity recognition in the field of healthcare will first be processed. Other components of the work are the preparation and visualization of free text in nursing documentation, the development of an annotation guideline based on a provided data model and the evaluation of the corpus by comparing state of the art algorithms (e.g. GELECTRA, XLM-RoBERTa).

Prerequisites: good knowledge of German (data material is in German), basic knowledge of Python and the use of Natural Language Processing Libraries (e.g. spaCy, NLTK), ideally experience in using Hugging Face

Courses: Computational Linguistics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science or comparable courses

Thesis: bachelor thesis
