Telecommunication providers need to focus on mobile data applications to generate profit in order to not be demoted to sole data pipes. This paper analyses what factors make such mobile data applications successful. Based on a literature review of business model research a business model for mobile data applications was developed. Based on a qualitative-empirical analysis instances of components of the business model were identified and classified in a taxonomy.
