About the Nature of Collaborative Business Processes

Interoperability is not a result; it is more a state that effect between objects. These objects may be of technical nature or of organisational nature. Presuming business interoperability effecting between e- business enterprises, this means an (technical and organisational) plug- and- do mechanisms for making business. Thus, businesses no longer operate independent business processes, but they come to a state where the processes are fitted together to form an overall value generation structure, supported by interconnected application systems. This article adressesthis core structural object (called dollaborative business process) and tries to deduct and analyze the special properties of this object. Moreover it delimits the collaborative business process against against other organizational concepts, e.g. processes in virtual enterprises. In the consequence, new requirements for future e- business systems that will support such collaborative business processes will be obvious.
