Research in focus

Automated remote inspection of critical infrastructures

More security through less personnel control – is that possible?

Decentralized facilities such as sewage treatment plants or pumping stations are essential for a secure water supply – but their regular inspections require high personnel costs, long travel distances, and rising CO₂ emissions. In addition, stricter regulations place additional burdens on operators.

Our solution

In the ARIKI research project, we are developing intelligent camera systems for continuous remote monitoring of safety-relevant areas in the wastewater industry. Combined with edge computing and AI-supported analytics, damage and irregularities are detected early – directly on-site and in real time. This increases supply reliability and operational efficiency while reducing costs and emissions.

In addition, we are creating a digital operating concept as a reference architecture for European water infrastructure operators. It enables automated self-monitoring, reduces risks to people and the environment, and makes a measurable contribution to a sustainable and resilient water management system.
