FishAI

1

Goal of FishAI is an ecologically and economically sustainable supply of fish products through recirculating aquaculture systems.

2

An intelligent, data-based feeding system is intended to make the use of feed more efficient and thus increase the productivity of the systems while reducing operating costs.

3

The basis is formed by autonomous sensors of the smart image recognition, with which a biomass determination and an evaluation of the feed intake should be possible.

Short & to the point

What?

with the research project FishAI is intended to increase the profitability of RAS systems and thus ensure a sustainable supply of fish products in Germany in accordance with the NASTAQ goals to be established by 2030. The focus is on achieving the following goals:

  • Increasing the degree of automation and reducing the operating costs of RAS systems
  • Improvement of animal welfare through optical, non-invasive measurement methods to reduce stress and the risk of injury and through optimal feed quantities adapted to the environmental conditions (e.g. water temperature).
  • Optimization of production & feed supply and thus reduction of resource use (here: feed)
  • intelligent data evaluation to provide forecasts regarding production quantities and product quality

How?

To achieve these goals, within the framework of FishAI developed an intelligent, data-based feeding system that can be integrated into existing RAS systems. The system is based on four core components: FishSizer (sizing), FeedWatch (feed intake), Dynamic Growth Models and Stock Management Dashboard.

The basis is formed by autonomous sensors of the smart image recognition, with which a biomass determination and an evaluation of the feed intake should be possible. Dynamic growth models that take species- and husbandry-specific characteristics into account should be created through the combination with metadata regarding husbandry conditions. With this database, reliable forecasts regarding the feed supply, production volume and product quality should be made possible, with which the profitability of the systems can be increased.

Initial Situation

Aquaculture is becoming more and more important for feeding the population, as the growing global demand for fish and sea products can no longer be met through wild capture without serious consequential costs for the environment.

In this context, recirculating aquaculture systems, as a location-independent solution in rural areas, offer a resource-saving, transparent and decentralized alternative to the previous supply.
